Beads of Courage is a resilience-based intervention designed to support and strengthen the protective resources in children coping with serious illness. Through the program children tell their story using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that commemorate milestones they have achieved along their unique treatment path. Who is Christy? A bead artist and teacher extraordinaire who also travels across the country beginning these special programs in hospitals large and small. http://www.xtyart.com/ Christy works with Jean M. Baruch, RN (President) Founder of the Beads of Courage Program and President of Beads of Courage, Inc. Former positions: Staff Nurse and Research Senior Nurse at University of Arizona. Education: University of Arizona College of Nursing, BSN 1997. And of course the children and young teens who have or had cancer... Here Christy gives a young child an additional bead for coming to the reception. Many people came to the opening to not only support Christy and enjoy her incredible bead work, but to meet and speak with these amazing children and teens... Janet Broyles, Chairperson of the Visual Arts Department at South Mountain High School, speaks with Kellie. Christy has been involved with multiple artist residency programs at South Mt. H.S. over these many years. Tom Wilson, Arizona Museum of Natural History Director, Jen Urso, another wonderful artist & Christy’s partner, came to share the evening with Christy and the youth. The children were thoroughly entertained with not only hands on projects, but much to SEE... A video was playing that combined stories documenting the work of Christy and the Beads of Courage program.
